Web Services Harmonization Special Interest Group Charter

Group type: Open public special interest group operating without confidentiality, full participation open to non-liberty members .

Date: June 4, 2008

1. Description

Various deployers and developers, both internal and external to the Liberty Alliance membership, share a common goal to harmonize ID-WSF and WS-Trust. The goal of this SIG is to expediently identify and document the use cases that drive this harmonization need, and will serve to prioritize the technical work that will ultimately be done in another forum(s). Another key goal of this SIG is to come to a consensus on where the technical work will take place that meets the industry harmonization requirements as captured in the initial slate of approved use cases.

2. Scope

The founding SIG participants recognize that deployers are working in an ever-evolving heterogeneous environment that requires interoperability of identity services (i.e. identity- and SOA-enabled applications), both internal and external to the enterprise. In order to advance the identity-enabled marketplace -- specifically application domains that rely upon identity-based web services -- this SIG is chartered to:

  • Become an active public discussion forum for the collection, development, and analysis of use cases that are met by ID-WSF leveraging WS-Trust composability and functionality.
  • Develop a detailed public roadmap that provides recommended next actions to the current stewards of the ID-WSF and WS-Trust standards (i.e. the Liberty Alliance Technology Expert Group and OASIS WSSX TC, respectively) for the technical work required.
  • Foster awareness of and participation in this harmonization effort from the broadest industry cross-section possible, both the near-term use case phase taking place in this SIG, the mid-term specification harmonization phase and the long-term adoption of the resulting harmonized web services stack.

3. Criteria for Success

  • Sufficient participation from experts, including: deployers, ID-WSF architects, WS-Trust architects, and other stakeholders both inside and outside the Liberty membership.
  • Engaged, collegial analysis of the use cases and technical roadmap for protocol harmonization next steps.
  • Vital activity including a demonstrated ability to meet self-imposed deadlines, meetings that meet quorum, active public email discussions, and consistent participation from a critical mass of contributors to maintain continuity.
  • Effective at moving the harmonization effort from early-stage use case analysis and road map discussions into the appropriate technical forum(s) in an expedient manner.

4. Duration

The Web Services Harmonization SIG is chartered by the Liberty Management Board to begin its work effective June 5, 2008 with no expiration date pre-defined, noting that the charter may be amended from time to time if needed.

    Resource Requirements

The Working Group requires the following support from the Liberty Alliance organization:

  • Mail lists established, with archives, on the public pages with a dedicated section of the public wiki
  • Globally available conference call facilities (including local toll free numbers), with a dedicated conference call access code not shared by other SIG's or Expert Groups, to allow for maximum flexibility in scheduling teleconferences.
  • Ability to delegate tasks to appointed Program Management Office staff including, but not limited to, management of mail lists, provisioning and deprovisioning of accounts, arrangement of conference call and/or WebEx facilities, and other administrative support that would serve to improve and/or accelerate the work of the SIG.

Active member participants in the SIG are expected to:

  • Contribute relevant use cases and constructive feedback that help map an overall solution for harmonization between ID-WSF and WS-Trust protocols.
  • Drive and actively participate in e-mail discussions, teleconferences, and in-person meetings as may be called from time to time by the Chair(s) of the SIG.

5. SIG meetings

The SIG will primarily communicate using the e-mailing lists, and conference calls, and/or webcast. A SIG open mailing list and wiki section will be created.

6.Participants

Participation in the Web Services Harmonization SIG is open to the general public.

Upon formation of this SIG a call for participation will be sent out to Liberty mailing lists (both internal and public).
